Someone who lost her way...
|Born||Jon Paul Neumann|
"Certainly the most destructive vice if you like, that a person can have. More than pride, which is supposedly the number one of the cardinal sins - is self pity. Self pity is the worst possible emotion anyone can have. And the most destructive. It is, to slightly paraphrase what Wilde said about hatred, and I think actually hatred's a subset of self pity and not the other way around - It destroys everything around it, except itself.
Self pity will destroy relationships, it'll destroy anything that's good, it will fulfill all the prophecies it makes and leave only itself. And it's so simple to imagine that one is hard done by, and that things are unfair, and that one is underappreciated, and that if only one had had a chance at this, only one had had a chance at that, things would have gone better, you would be happier if only this, that one is unlucky. All those things. And some of them may well even be true.But, to pity oneself as a result of them is to do oneself an enormous disservice."—Stephen Fry
Chloe Sagal, formerly known as Jon Paul Neumann, is a transgendered Game Developer who has created some actually well-received games, such as Homesick and Virus Jiggin' Fever (which are also infinitely superior to certain other games covered by this wiki). Because of her talents and skills, she's earned a modest Patreon income from this. She's even done work making games for Xbox Live Indies, most notably That Really Hot Chick.
Simple glancing at her history would suggest she's a decent developer, perhaps even laudable for someone with a one-person studio (she made Homesick's engine from scratch)! if one with something of an ego, but tragically that is not what has led to her coverage here. Instead, it is her bizarre, caustic, and openly self-destructive behavior - behavior that's been cynically manipulated by several of the people she initially put her trust in, only to metastasize later into a storm of paranoia and self-depreciation. A common claim by members of the Kiwi Farms is that Sagal may be one of the most tragic and horrific cases the Farms has covered, an individual with impressive talent, who through selfishness, bad decisions, and even worse allies, got pushed into a direction where her worst traits were allowed to come to the fore. Certain parties willing to feed her delusions did her no favors.
It is these traits that make Sagal one of the most darkly fascinating people of interest the Farms has yet covered, someone both tragic and yet completely responsible for their own fall from grace. From the moment she was exposed as a scam-artist, Chloe Sagal immediately began a steep downward dive into professional victimhood and outright insanity - as well as constant suicide-baiting, calls for attention and financial support, and borderline-psychotic meltdowns wherein she will alternate between threatening people's lives, claiming to be dying, claiming to be a person of color, and coming up with delusional, paranoid theories of how the world itself is out to get her. At no point does she ever take legitimate advice or attempt to improve her lot; instead the initial incident has unsealed a bottomless wellspring of self-loathing and learned helplessness that would legitimately make one feel sorry for her, if she did not have the potential to be openly abusive towards others and essentially use up any goodwill she may have earned from sympathy. She has an extremely long history of being psychologically abusive, if not outright destructive, routinely using threats of violence, self-harm, and suicide to get what she wants. She has done this so often and with such rote repetition that it has achieved minor meme status on the Kiwi Farms.
Her deep-seated paranoia, vicious manipulative streak, and inability to sort her life out has systemically alienated almost everyone she's ever been close to, and this will continue to happen until Sagal learns to accept culpability for her own actions and, ultimately, improve herself and take charge over her life.
IndieGogo Scam and Allistair Pinsof Scandal
Chloe Sagal's first major public incident involved one of the biggest scandals in IndieGogo's history.
Sagal had crowdsourced funding to help her with "lifesaving surgery" that purportedly resulted from a car accident that gave her metal poisoning. All evidence is that this accident never happened, and thus was entirely a fabrication - a ruse being used to instead fund Chloe Sagal's sexual reassignment surgery. The affair was covered by Destructoid reporter Allistair Pinsof, who quickly learned the truth, but was quickly silenced by Sagal threatening to commit suicide if he brought it forward. Even without Pinsof being a threat, however, Chloe Sagal still faced challenges; as she gave no details about her surgery and no information about what was involved, people started to suspect (correctly) that she was a scam-artist.
Sagal had always had ties to a certain indie clique, if only tangentially, and it was this advantage that got her covered by Destructoid in the first place. Eventually, caught between his civic duty as a reporter (informing potential donators that they were flat-out being scammed) and staying quiet on the matter, Pinsof contacted his superiors at Destructoid and asked them what to do. They didn't get back to him, and, ultimately, he chose to blow the whistle on the whole thing. In response, Pinsof was absolutely lambasted by his associates for daring to "out" someone who was planning to conduct tendss of thousands of dollars worth of fraud, but indeed, calling for his firing and subsequent blacklisting to prevent him from ever working in the industry again.
But there was another, darker reason that the retaliation against Pinsof had been so fearsome: Chloe Sagal was a designated friend of the clique, and many of the individuals who were calling for Pinsof's head, surely by coincidence, happened to be individuals who were involved in the Game Journo Pros list and the scandal from that - including Destructoid owner Yanier “Niero” Gonzalez. It was quickly revealed that the GJP group had blacklisted Pinsof in everything but name, an action that came dangerously close to violating criminal laws. This exposure would turn into a major sticking point for GamerGate, as Sagal had not only committed a scam, but had gotten several sites to put themselves on the line for her sake and even destroy a man's career because he chose to speak the truth.
Meanwhile, most of the sites that originally covered Sagal's plight quickly realized that they had been played for fools. With IndieGogo first suspending her campaign because of supporters asking too many questions, the Pinsof scandal was the final nail in its coffin, and Chloe Sagal responded by attempting to kill herself live on Twitch, after repeatedly guilt-tripping several forums she frequented. She survived.
One might think that after such an incident, Chloe Sagal might want to do her best to avoid drawing attention to herself, having successfully outed herself as a scam-artist, sensationalizer, and being directly involved with the termination and blacklisting of a journalist.
One would think wrong.
